Skylights
For a few days after dark, our paths from the side of the old limestone quarry are illuminated with dancing skylights.
Strictly speaking, these are not skylights (Lampyris noctula), which appear later – in July, but sparks (Phausis splendidula) belonging to the same family.Females do not fly but wait shining in the bushes for their flying “boys” , while males “dance” luminously in the air looking for female partners.
No matter what they are called they provide us a theater for free, without tickets! The lights of sparks along with the sounds of the surrounding forest create in the evenings wonderful performances of “light and sound”.
